Toying with an idea in my head to swap out the C^ automatic I have on my 7.3L diesel for a 5 speed...How big of a mess is this to do???I know, gotta switch pedal assemblies, cut the hole in floorpan, etc. I have a parts truck that has a 4.9L 6 cylionder 5 speed in it, so I have the pedal assemblie, other parts for the swap, just need the proper tranny from another diesel, this 5 speed has 2 hamburger gears..
Sorry to sound stupid, but what's hamburger gears? I'd say you shouldn't have much trouble putting it in. I don't know, but I'm pretty sure that year has the same bellhousing as the 460, I'm not sure. I'd say your best bet is to find another donor truck with a diesel with a 5 speed already in it, because your gonna have to get a flywheel and a new driveshaft plus I'm not sure that the F150 would have the same pedal assemblies as your truck.
Hamburger gears? Maybe he means he has two charbroiled-all-beef-patties in there? Or they're trashed?
As far as the bellhousing goes, whether it IS the same as a 460 or not you'd probably need the deisel gear ratio spread vs. the gas gear ratio spread to be happy
The pedal assemblies I think should be the same up until they changed to the newer dashboards in the early 90's.
The tranny you're after has a fixed yoke rear end, so your going to need a different drive shaft. I'm pretty sure you're going to need a 2 peice drive shaft with a carrier bearing. . .don't hold that as gospel, but make sure you're sure you don't
Hehe, I figured I'd get something going by calling the front gears in that tranny hamburger gears, as they look like something you could use to grind meat for a hamburger...Not sure what's involved with fixing that tranny, but it came along with the parts truck....I do know where a 5 speed that came from behind a 7.3L diesel is at, but it's also from a 4x4, so not sure what I could use from that setup.....
Sorry to sound stupid --- but, I don't know --- but I'm pretty sure --- that year has the same bell-housing as the 460, Matt

Sounds like 3 warnings to me.
But seriously.
The Diesel bell-housing bolt pattern is 100% different from all the others, and the 460 bell-housing will not work in any way on the 6.9/7.3 Diesel block.
You need the Diesel bell-housing, flywheel and clutch.
All the rest of the linkage and pedal assemblies should be the same unless there is a different ratio used in the pedal lever itself.
You might get lucky and find a drive shaft of the right length that will fit right, but make DAMN SURE it fits the length right and not just close enough to look like it should work.
The clutch fork pivot point was moved in when they went to the hydraulic clutch and you will never be able to get the pedal to even start moving to the floor if you use a hydraulic bell-housing with the mechanical lever assembly.
I got caught on that pivot point issue once, but was lucky that the old mechanical pivot point location was still partly cast into my housing and I was able to re-drill, tap, and move it.
I HATE THOSE HYDRAULIC CLUTCHES!

Not to jump too far off topic, but I thought they used the 460 bellhousing with the diesel gear set and had a stock adapter for the SAE block bellhousing pattern. Now, I'm not sure it is still done or for that matter with manual tranny's but I have seen a few c6/6.9 adapters on Ebay. . .was that just a c6/6.9 thing that ended with the 7.3 and 5 speed? Or am I totally confused
Hmm, looking at that makes me think the 6.9L and 7.3L had different bolt patterns for the tranny???? I had thought they were the same....You guys know more about this than I do, it's been several years since I had a ford in the driveway....

Lol, you knew what hamburger gears were?
I know the 460 and diesel were the same bellhousing when the first diesels came out, but I didn't know if they had changed them over when they started using the 7.3's.
