Restoring a 1966 Ford Truck with a 1979 302. Had a 3 speed on the column with exhaust manifolds and everything seemed fine. Before taking it to get painted I decided I would rather have an automatic. Got a 1986 C-5 and had it rebuilt and changed to headers since I now had more room. Just got everything together and have a noise apparently from the rear engine/front transmission area on acceleration from a stop. Lasts a few seconds and goes away. Hard to describe the noise but it is fairly loud when it occurs. Any ideas?
O.K. Here's more info. Today I placed the truck on jackstands and had my wife put it in drive and let off the brake while I was under the truck listening for the location of the noise. It is definitely in the converter area and is what I would describe as a loud squeak lasting for only about 1 second when the brake is let off while in drive. It also occurs when the brake is applied and you are going from drive to reverse. However, when you are doing this it makes the noise when you go to reverse with the brake still applied. Could this be a bad converter? Also, thanks for your reply. I did tweak the shields a little since they did look close to the converter bolts but now after describing the sound as more of a squeak, I don't think this is the source of the noise.
No other ideas? I've asked many people in person and I think each has a different idea. From flexplate to converter to a bearing. Thanks in advance for any help/ideas.
