E4OD transmission woes

i dont know if any one else has had this problem but in my dealings with both mine and my dads 95 f-150's they dont seem to want to shift under a heavy or full throtle during acceleration? what causes this? i know with mine if i floor it from a stop it accelerates great then when it comes time for the 1-2 shift it just wont **** until i let off to atleast a half throtle. is there anything i can do to fix the problem?

I think thats normal.. If you have it full throttle it will definetly shift at a much higher RPM, if you shift too low It could grind up th gears. From a rolling start in second gear, sometimes my tranny wont downshift to 1st and i'll have to feather the throttle for it to kick down.

yeah i understand that this is normal operation but what im looking for is how do i eliminate this? so it will shift at WOT? i did find a transmission shift control for the E40D made by banks performance. has anyone dealt with this control unit? also i see that b&m makes one for our transmissions.

It should definatly shift at WOT. Does it have a tach? If not, I'd invest in one and see what kind of RPM's your at to shift in. If you have it to the floor you really don't want it to shift anyways, at least until it get up in the RPM's. If I floored my bronco it would shift at 5500 RPM's, but I think that's just because it ran out of steam and couldn't pull anymore, so it would shift. The E4OD is computer controlled, so I'm pretty sure it's programmed to shift at a certain speed at WOT, but I don't know what it would be.

What type of motor's in it? If it's a 302, it shouldn't have any trouble revving to about 5500 RPM's before it shifts. Get ya a tach and find out.

At WOT it will eventually shift. My 95 with the 351 will shift around 4300-4500 RPM. With my truck, taking it past 4500 is worthless b/c it falls flat on its faced. The 351 was known for the good low-mid range cam that they had in them. Get a tach like mtthwvn73 suggested. These trucks scream at high RPM's, so don't worry about the noise... just worry about the revolutions!

One thing I have found with these tranny's is they like clean fluid and filters I had one that would do close to the same thing also would shudder when going into drive/overdrive did a fluid and filter change and it stopped

Yep, fluid and filter are the usual suspects for the E4OD. How old is the fluid?

When you're swapping out the fluid and filter...throw in a TransGo Shift kit. I've had mine for 60,000 miles. Hard to recognize the stock E4OD after. Shifts cleaner, firmer, and responds better under WOT. The kit runs around $80 from Summit.

That would fix your problem.

Good luck

Have fun a B&M shift kit will help . But if the trans hasn't been serviced in say 100000 miles I would touch it. I had several failures right after new fluid/filter was put in on high mileage trans. . But I can get the trans swapped in 4 1/2 hrs. Good luck on fix

thanks for the help guys, yeah the fluid is real clean looking/smelling and i know better than to service it if its never been changed yet with 117,000 on it, but it looks like its been done. i dotn see any probs with it during regular driving it shifts great. i was just curious about the WOT delay on the 1-2 shift. i think first what im gonna do is get a tach and install it because i dont have one so i really cant tell what its trying to shift at. i was looking at an autometer sport comp in the 3.5" size with no shift light. i think that will work well and go just about anywheres on the dash for install.

just out of curiousity mr.m how does that truck of yours run? good power and such? right now im building a basically identical build with a 306. im still deciding on porting the e7's or just getting a set of iron gt40's.

I'm very happy with the build. Pulls real hard. Tows great and has no trouble lighting up 33" tires.

The truck gets up and goes. And if you're gentle to her, can deliver 18+ mpg..... even turning 33" tires on 4.10's.

Install the shift kit and upgrade the valve body if you can. As insurance for my E4OD: I also have a B&M trans-cooler, inline 2nd transmission filter, and an aftermarket finned aluminum transmission pan (+4 quarts fluid).

If you know how to port (and not just remove a bunch of head material to fit bigger valves) the e7's do the trick. And if they are done properly, will outperform gt40's. Make sure you go with long tube headers!! After the head and cam work, the headers (FULL LENGTH!!) were an extensive improvement. I hope your build includes a MAF setup. Otherwise your ECU will have fits with any similar cam.

Muchas gracias! If you stick with the ported e7's, then my build specs should work well for you. If not, then it would be of little use.
