Quick towing question

when ever we go wheelin out wheelin far with 2 rigs on the trailer i bring the 350 dually super crew. its my moms daily driver and the only bone stock PSD in the world haha.

its a 99 so it dosent have a cat, i was wondering if i took the exhust off right before the muffler and dumped it down so its essintially a budget stright pipe if that would increase MPG at all. figure it could help a bit with egts on steep pulls that i tend to drive hard on. but was wondering if that bit of restriction gone if it would pull any better mpg

what yall think?

I think letting it exhaust under the truck might not be legal, and wouldn't pass safety inspection in most states. I researched this some before modifying my exhaust as shown in the two pics below. I've got an early 99 that did have a CAT, now has a US Gear exhaust brake in its place, followed by a Banks muffler, which I could do without, but it was part of my Stinger kit, and the exhaust exists in front of the passenger rear tire. The law in TX is, if I'm remembering correctly from 8.5 years ago, that the exhaust must exit from under the truck at least 22" to the rear of the cab. With my new setup compared to stock, the EGT was a little lower, the turbo spooled better, and the mpg got a little better.

dont care to much about the leaglity for just a weekend trip. so by ditching the muffler it sounds like it might get a little better mpg loaded

I had my stock exaust straight piped before I go my 4" turbo back. It helped a bit but it sounded like the jetsons space car on take off! It also got pretty loud when I got on it (ugly kinda loud). I did notice a difference in power though without that big monster muffler.

I have mine cut off right before where the muffler was... I don't have an EGT gauge so i can't say if it helped with that or not. And as for mpg I havn't had a full tank through it since i have done it. But i like the way it sounds. I say go for it but just make it easy for yourself to put back, if somone complains lol.

I was thinking about doing the same thing. The straight pipe sounds great down low but man when you get on it I think the flutter sounds awful, I followed a straight piped truck one day and that flutter was getting annoying to me.
