Last week I went up to Watkins Glen towing my open car trailer, car and bed full of spare wheels, tools, other stuff. Tow load is about 5000 pounds. Took RT15 up. I caravaned up with some friends. We were hauling 65-70 up one of the large hills past Williamsport. Truck was running fine, I looked down to see the boost gauge at 29-30lbs of boost. I was at about 3/4 throttle. All of a sudden the boost gauge dropped to zero, truck continued to pull, no smoke, I went ahead and backed off the throttle. Once we reached the top of the hill, boost came back on. I've searched looking for a thread with a similar issue but haven't found anything. Was this just a loose connection, or did the computer back something off?
I never saw this again, on the trip up or the trip home. My mpg was 15.2 for the round trip.
Hey Todd,
Did the truck sound any different? Also is that a pillar guage or dash gauge in the 05+? Did the truck get hot as well?
Might have been a guage malfunction if the truck still pulled fine.
If you lost all boost you would defiantly know it. The turbo failed in our '03 6.0 while going up a steep hill pulling our 5th wheel, I knew instantly. Felt like motor completely shut down, the 6.0 is completely dependent on the turbo. Sounds like your gage just failed for a moment.
From your description, I have to agree with slorider. If you lost boost going up a hill the truck would have fell flat on its face. Sounds like a gauge issue. At this point I would just keep an eye on the gauge and the sounds of the engine to see if it happens again.
That has happened to me too. I was towing about 12,000 up a 6% grade and boost gauge would suddenly drop to zero. Did this a couple times but did not feel any changes in power, sound or smoke. Kept EGT running about 1100-1200 for about 2-3 min up the grade. Idiot temp gauage did not move much but fans was at full tilt.
