Just picked up a '93 F150 with a 300 last week... runs great except for one problem. When starting dead cold, it will catch then either die or almost die. Also when pulling away from a stop it will bog a little bit. When warm it runs fine. Is there a common cause of this, or should I just wait for my FSMs to arrive?
Have you tried to see if the computer has stored any codes? Is the check engine light on? Sounds like it might be running a little lean during the warm up period.
Have you checked to see if the plate inside the throttle body and just behind it is dirty?
No light, don't know how to check for codes (ordered manuals a couple days ago) have not inspected anything that requires disassembly yet. I just got the truck about a week and a half ago, so I'm still in that "getting to know you" stage - today for example I cleaned up the battery and cables and also the front ground points and fixed the ashtray (PO had removed it and cut the wires to the lighter - don't know why)
Is the throttle body easily cleanable? I know that some TB's don't like being cleaned with carb cleaner, is this one of them or can I go ahead and spray away?
Some carb cleaners should not be used. They make a throttle body spray that is safe for sensor and such. Checking plugs and tune up items like v10squirrel suggested could make a big difference also.
