How do you put the Harmonic balancer/Vibration Damper back on, Does it need to be preesed, is there a tool, or do you use a flat object to hammer it back on?? Thanx for any input.
I just put the H/B on as far as I could, then I threaded a bolt into the crak on my 302 with a stack of LARGE washers and tiightened it down. I threaded a bolt into a spark plug hole to use as a piston stop also. DO NOT USE A HAMMER! You could damage the crank bearings if you hammer on it too hard or too long. The installation tool the above poster described is pretty much the same technique I described.
With a little creativity, you can use the balancer puller, I actually have a picture of me doing this, but I can't figure out how to post it. It'll ruin the puller tool, but if you rented it, they won't care. TK

Lieutenant Daly, please pardon my disagreeing with your experience and recommendation to intentionally destroy another man's tools for your own convenience. As you are in training to be a leader of men in what could be life and death situations, I would hope you direct your future responsibilites in a more responsible manner. Do not take my message as a comment on your mechanical and technical abilites, I read your postings and learn from them.
What I mean by ruin is that the top few threads on the bolt will be smashed, but there's no way that anybody will ever need that part of the tool again. I've done it twice, and used the same tool. I don't like intentional destruction of tools either. As I returned it, it was still perfectly functional, but it looks rough. I don't know about you, but I have no problem asking my tools to perform to their limits. No harm, I even work part time at the store I borrowed it from, and nobody has a problem with it. So in conclusion, it "roughs it up," not actually ruins it, because the full function is retained. TK
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Jul-02 AT 02:55 AM (EST)]joker, what motor are you working on? On a 460, 400, 351M I know for sure uses a 5/8" fine threaded bolt. I made my own installation tool with a chunk of 5/8" fine threaded allthread, a grade 8, 5/8" fine threaded nut and the washer from the dampner bolt itself. I don't have $10.00 in it. And have used it many times. Don't ever beat a dampner on with a hammer.
