So, I bought a 302 out of a wrecked f-150 at a junkyard, everything spun well, and looked good, So I put it together. It has gt40p heads, MSD6 distributor and box, edelbrock performer intake, and an edelbrock 4bbl carb. After putting it all together, and setting the timing and constantly getting backfires, i found that for some reason the 1986 f-150 had a 302 HO motor in it, I rewired the distributor to the right firing order, and it ran. I ran the bronco in my driveway and drove it around the block a few days, untill i got the ***** to drive it up to the exhaust shop to get the tail pipes welded on. About halfway there the truck dies, and wont start unless my foot is on the gas 3/4, then dies instantly when i pull it off. The carb has gas all over it, and the carbuerator is spitting gas out of the top when the pedal is depressed. Any ideas? Id like to hear that I just need a new carb, please dont tell me I need to rebuild the motor again.
carb probably needs rebuilt or adjusted or replaced. what did you set the timing to? also that year truck would have been efi so unless you removed the electric fuel pump you may have an issue there with it forcing to much fuel into the motor which will cause failur
Thanks for the quick responses! The motor has a mechanical fuel pump on it, which is new as of last year, so that should be okay. The timing is at 13-15ish... I guess i drop the cash on the carb and see what happens?
hello, sounds to me like when you had the plugs wires setup for a non-HO firing order it was backfiring and what not you blew out a power valve, gasket or float/seat/needle valve in the carb...
if it is leaking both internal & external you probably have filled the crankcase with gas as the other guys mentioned. check & change the oil, I have lost bearings to this very same thing.
