Why Drive em Hard?

I am sort of new to Diesels so you will have to excuse me. <O:p</O:p

I have a few questions:<O:p</O:p

1. It seems like everyone talks about driving their diesels hard, what does that exactly mean? <O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p2. Why do you need to drive them hard, what does it do to the engine if you don’t? Also what makes driving it hard better for the engine(mechanically)? <O:p</O:p

Any help is appreciated, I would love to read some articles on this instead of just peoples opinions. (Even though I value peoples opinion from this site).<O:p</O:p

Peoples real life experience always wins out so I was hoping people could share there experiences.<O:p</O:p

<O:p</O:p

Thanks<O:p</O:p

I think most people are refering too working the turbo. I believe if they are not worked on occasion it's possible for them to set up. I'm also a newbie going on 8months now. Lot's to learn and love every minute of it.

Towin is what most refer to drivin a truck hard. You dont have to, nothing will happen if you dont. These trucks were made to work and most that own them have the intentions on making them work. Its all good either way, they're still PSD's at the end of the day.

If you are only making short trips you won't get your diesel engine up to temperature. Diesel engines are more efficient when they are warmed up.

I also have the same questions, if you let a newer diesel sit a lot and just slow-poke around town on weekends like I do with my 1976 Highboy will that screw up the diesel?

Letting a diesel idle for long periods of time with low cylinder temps can cause wetstacking, fuel dilution in the oil and scared injectors. You also need to get on the pedal once in a while to bring cylinder pressure and temp up this will provide optimal piston ring seating and less blow by.

Diesel engines were designed to be used as work machines. If you just like to drive-em empty that will in NO way affect there service life.

Running them hard just for kicks will only wear out the drivetrain faster. With any diesel since the Powerstrokes came out at least, you shouldn't need to drive any harder than normal and they will last as long as they should.

Now when the 6.0 came out, a lot of people started staying that they "needed" to be driven hard to keep the EGRs from clogging up and turbo vanes from sticking. The real problem was that the 6.0 was a POS and most people couldn't admit that. So they made up excuses like you need to drive it hard instead of admitting that there was a problem with design and it was rushed into production.

Once you did run them hard though, the heads lifted off the block and your headgaskets blew. (Yes even stock)

Wetstacking and the like should be a thing of the past. Regeneration will occur regardless of running it hard and will complete just the same.

Short trips will affect any engine just the same. Not reaching opperating temps is bad for any engine, but is unavoidable sometimes. Moisture build up, less efficient, etc, etc, these things affect all engines, gas and diesel.

In short, running them hard just because only wastes fuel.

BLK94F150,

Come on now...

The 6.0 is not a POS. Yes, the 03 and 04 model years did indeed have problems (and more than Ford would like to admit) but the 05, 06 and 07s are very good engines. Bowie asked about what driving "hard" meant, not what you thought of the 6.0

Also, did you or do you own one? If so then it sounds like you had issues. If you didn't then why even comment...

Fish

Oh Yes, I do own an 06 and love it. Great truck, great engine, great fuel economy and great fun!

BFSD350-The guy that started this thread also didnt ask for your trucks resume or what you thought of the 6.0 either. Keep it on topic!

It's when the 6.0 came out that I started hearing people always talking about "needing" to run them hard. It was because of those issues for the most part.

So to the original poster, there is no "need" to run them hard without reason. It will only wear out parts faster.

On the subject of 6.0s, no I do not own one and never will. However, I'm a firefighter/paramedic and I've driven a slew of them. Probably more than most people on this forum have. We drive them hard and 24/7. They just don't hold up.

Dang I dont know what would hold up to 24/7 abuse. At the international plant they only dyno one for around 8 hrs and they arent dynoed hard a fraction of the time. All I've read on this suggest that they that recommend it are recommending to not baby it all the time. From time to time let it splurg, eat alittle, clear its lungs matter of speaking.
Does it help? I dont notice any difference from one time to the other. My truck works almost everyday. The periods where we dont she dont start acting up none so I have no complaints.

BFD you drive a damn ambulance once in a while. That makes YOU an authority? Spare me. You apparently drive a 1994 F150 probably with a sweet inline 6 motor so dont give me that "well we drive them at work" crap because that dog dont hunt around here. You know I hear that men who drive F150's are pole smokers. That's what I hear so it must true right? Get back in the F150 forum where you belong and let the men here discuss our diesel trucks from REAL ownership points of view and experience. I know at least 10 people with PSD's and NOT ONE SINGLE PROBLEM with any of them so far, including myself......

ARE YOU SERIOUS RIGHT NOW? DO YOU KISS YOUR MOTHER WITH THAT MOUTH? You must be a complete moron, the guy is givin his opinion and your callin him a pole smoker? what're you 15 and learn a new word? Im gonna ask you nicely to recant your statement and leave the forum before I get mad and report you to Admin and have you booted. Your choice, leave on your own or be kicked out. I nor will FTE tolerate bashing or harrassment of any kind. You must have forgot to read your FTE guidelines, which dosnt suprise me with your low level of intelligence and narrow minded vocabulary. The guy has the right to say whatever he wants and if you dont agree with it then dont but resulting to caveman tactics is not gonna fly. You know 10 people with PSD's thats great but do you talk to them like this? Surely if you did you wouldnt call them friend. This forum is open to anybody and everybody, nothing says you have to stay in one forum or another, and nobody gave you the authority to tell him to leave. So its your choice, recant and leave till you grow up and can handle some criticism or be booted off for good, never to return. You make the choice, and choose wisely.
