looking at adding a new catback exhaust, CAI, and a bama programmer to my 01' 3.0l......don't have any prior SCT device or any other programming devices....wondering which programmer I should go w/??? Heard the X cal 2 is good, but will I need any additional equipment??
From everything I've gathered, what you'll get from the catback and CAI is a nice sounding truck, but don't expect a lot of extra ponies, but the 3.0 might benifit from them more than the 4.0. Wendell borror runs an SCT Bama for his 4.0 which is proven to pump up the ponies and mpg's. One of the other guys will definitely chime in with what it'll do for the 3.0.
Oh, the 3.0 is affectionately known as the 3.slow. I've heard from several people that they have a nice low end for using the truck for running loads around the farm and such, but has the same power overall as the 2.3 and no better mpgs as the 4.0.
Since the intake for the 3.0 and 4.0 are the same stock, and since a 'cold air intake' doesn't really gain anything on a 4.0, it seems impossible for any real gain from a cai on a 3.0 - I'd keep the money.
Since the exhaust size is the same for a 3.0 and a 4.0, and since the aftermarket exhausts are only good for a few horses at the high rpm range on a 4.0, it seems impossible for any real gain from an exhaust system on a 3.0 - I'd keep the money.
The Bama Xcal2 is documented to gain ~10 lb-ft and ~10 hp on the 4.0, and Doug really know what he's doing, so that seems a good investment. On my 4.0 before I added the s/c, I was getting more power and better mileage w/ the Xcal2! (Now I just have more power!) Plus, if you have an auto, Doug can make the shifting better w/ the tuner as well.
You got to have a good catback, for the sound if nothing else. It will make your truck sound fast as hell if it is or not. Bama is the best programer available for ford products, bar none!!!!!!!!!!
Check out my site, weve got all the available performance parts all laid out for you. The underdrive pulley we sell for your truck is made by ASP racing, possibly the best brand in the industry.
I will just throw my 2 cents worth in, I have a bama, a CAI, and a flow master mufler with a tad larger pipe all on my 3.0. The combination works wonders, you'll want the torque programs, they seem to wake up the 3.0 the most -
I think wht I'll go w/first are the k&n cai, a catback gibson exhaust, and the x cal 2 bama programmer, and see wht that does for performance and horsepower....I don't want a racing machine, just a truck w/some better torque and pickup for passing and a little bit of towing....if I'm not happy w/that, I try and add some gibson headers....the only thing I'm worried about there is that I'll have some back pressure w/the stock exhaust pieces that I leave on it, i.e. the stock 2" crossover pipe and converter....the gibson headers are direct factory replacement and will work w/the existing crossover pipe, but I'm not sure if I'll be okay using the stock 2" crossover or if I should go bigger...not quite sure how this back pressure works w/upgrading exhaust pieces....then, later on down the road, I may add the efan and underdrive pulley, not too bad on the prices for those....if anyone's added headers on a 3.0l using pieces of the stock exhaust, let me know how its goin' for ya....
I went about the same way you are talking about doing it, first CAI and Exhaust - then the programmer. That way Doug can tune in your mods. If you find any more info on the headers post it up, I am curious -
So with a Bama chip, do you have to put higher octane gas in your truck to get any benefit? I was planning on getting a new exhaust from the headers back, and maybe a chip, but that was a few years ago. Different priorities now.
You dont NEED higher octane, we (BamaChips) can make a performance/mileage tune that will use 87 octane and still give some great results, but for more power we recommend higher octanes. The tuners come with three different tunes, that can utilize any octane fuel, so you will have the option to switch between octanes whenever you wish.
