I replaced the fuel pump assembly today in my ranger and let me tell you it was a pain in the rear. I have a few questions. I was unable to get the hose back on the fuel vapor valve (i believe this is what it is) and I didn't get the clip on the right way on one of the fuel lines, but it wont come off, i tugged on it. And lastly I couldn't get the skid plate back on. Are these things that are a real big deal? I figured the fuel vapor valve would still release the built up vapors, they would just be under the bed rather than wherever the hose runs, and as long as the line won't come off, I couldn't see how that little clip being on the wrong way would matter. Lastly, the skid plate looks like it would barely protect anything anyway. Thanks for the advice.
I'm taking it you dropped the tank and didn't remove the bed? Removing the bed makes it simple.
The vapor line runs back to the engine compartment to a canister that feeds the vapor back into the engine. I'm not sure if you can pass emissions inspection (if applicable) without it hooked up, not to mention it may throw a CEL.
The skid plate should go back on if you off-road regularly, but it's not a day to day necessity, the 2WDs and some of the 4WDs never came with them.
