Just a thought, you can't jump the voltage regulator and get the truck to start. What you were jumping was most likely the starter solinoid. I only mention this to avoid confusion if you go into a parts store for parts.
If you have a automatic you have a neutral safety switch. If you have a manual you have a clutch safety switch that requires the clutch pedal to be fully depressed before the starter will work. Either of these switches have been known to go bad as previously mentioned.
hmmmmmm..lol what ever the black part thats got 3 bolts mount on side of fender under hood always thought it was called voltage regulator,,but sense it is connnected to hot wire on starter urs makes sense,,,lol
Yes, that is the starter solinoid you are talling about. Once again, I am not trying to be a smart A here, just wanted to save some confusion / time at the parts store -
FYI - The voltage regulator for the charging system has to do with recharging your battery, and there is a small voltage regulator on the backside of your instrument panel as well to supply a constant lower than the nominal 12 volts to your dash instruments.
If you have a EFI engine, then there are additional voltage regulators built into the computer control system as well.
But the good news is that there is only one starter soliniod !
ok next time it happens i'll see if its the gear shift movement helps....
but were is nuertral switch???
The neutral switch is not mounted near the parking brake or on the column.
The neutral switch on 1980's trucks with a C6 is mounted on the transmission manual control lever, left side of case. ------------------------------------------------------------------
