I have searched and have come up with alot of mileage figures, but mostly alot of off topic posts, and more 250 and 350 mileage numbers. What I am specificly looking for is fuel mileage numbers strictly for F-450's. Please indicate standard or auto trans, 4.30 or 4.88 gear ratio, 4X2 or 4X4, and loaded or empty. I am trying to decide on how I want to build my 450.
Hi Ryan. This isn't going to be revelational, but hear me out. I could do a search and come up with some solid posts about F450 fuel economy, that I recall reading, but I think that would be of limited help for specing your new truck.
I mean if you need 4WD does it matter if the 2WD gets 1.7 mpg better fuel economy? The rear end gears also make a difference in mpg and I can imagine which gear set to be a tougher decision than 4WD vs. 2WD, but if you need to tow a 20-24k# trailer you really should go with the 4.88 with the extra tow capacity package.
Personally the hardest part about me passing on the 4.88s in favor of the 4.30s was the "what if" factor. Like what if I buy a larger and heavier trailer sometime in the future for which the 4.88s would be the best choice. However I finally decided that I don't have that trailer now and regardless I still spend a considerable amount of time driving with a loaded bed and no trailer and for that I like the lower RPMs at highway speed that the higher gearing offers.
Good luck with your decision. It ain't an easy one and there sure are a lot of choices to make.
BigSky is correct. If you need 4x4 or 4.88's the mpg really doesn't matter.
However, I have 4x4, crew, KR, 4.88's.
I rarely run it unloaded, I pull an 18k goose neck most of the time however my best figures for unloaded which was +/-2,000 miles ago was 12 mpg in mixed driving. Pulling I am getting 8 mpg mixed driving.
I now have 8,500 miles on the truck. Hope this helps.
I get about 14-15 in town with a 4x4 4.88 auto. I get about 10-11 while towing my horse trailer loaded with 8 horses. It does pretty good. Those low gears are great!
Our truck (auto,4x4, 4.88) pulling @ 24-26,000lbs runs about 7.5mpg. That is for short hauls mind you. Twenty miles here, ten to the next job type thing plus I like to warm my trucks up in the morning for about 10min.
Yeah, you guys are right, but for the sake of conversation I included 2wd. I need 4X4, and I am all about the "what if" factor (Thinking about a 5ver in the distant future, and who knows when I may want to haul 30k on a trailer). The actual fuel usage is pretty neglagable due to not paying for it, but if for some reason these benefits ever part ways with me, I don't want something that I cannot afford to go on vacation with. I appreciate the replies so far, keep 'em comming.

Ok let me give this a shot!
I have a F-450 with auto and 4X4 4.88
Extra tow capacity package
Avg 12.3 to 12.6 mpg empty
15K trailer 8 to 9 mph
