Identifying parts

Last month I bought myself a 79. It has a 460 in it, how do I find out what tranny it has? Also, it has a lift with 37" tires. How do I find out how much the lift is? I could probably measure the blocks in the rear, front should be the same lift as the rear right?

IF it Could be a NP435 or a T-18 if it is a maunal.

The NP435 used by Ford form 1964 to 1987 in there truck.

The NP435 can be identified by the following characteristics:

· Top loaded, tower shift

· cast iron case and rectangular aluminum top (that is retained by eight bolts)

· This transmission is 10.8" long eight bolts.

· The Ford NP435 has a 1-1/16" diameter, ten spline input shaft that has a stick-out of 6-1/2" from the front face of the transmission.

· The front bolt pattern is the symmetrical Ford "butterfly" pattern; roughly 8-1/2" wide by 6-5/16" tall.

<O></O>

This Trans is also on the low tech side with its non-synchronized in 1st gear. Second gear through 4th synchros are aluminum ring/pin assemblies and the 3rd/4th synchro has outer "pie plates". There are no brass synchro rings. <O></O>

<O></O>

The shifting pattern for all of the 435's is in the standard "H" pattern with reverse gear being to the right side, and down.

Gear Ratio

NP435E (Ford)1st 6.68, 2nd 3.34, 3rd 1.74, 4th 1.00, R8.26<O></O>

<O></O>

The Ideal Lube for this Trans is An 80W-90, API-GL5 or MT-1 rated Gear Oil

If your Bronco has manual lock out hubs you have an NP205 t case if you have non manual locking hubs you have the NP203 t Case

As far as a how much lift you have on the bronco Measure the front springs with it not compressed by the vehicals weight. Then subtract 13 inches from that and that will tell you roughly how much lift you have.

This will not work if the front springs are varible spring rated though but the 4 inch usaly measure like 26 inches. they are usally paited grey

No need to crawl under and see what trans it is:

To retain the shift lever to the shift tower, the Warner 4 speed transmissons (T-18/T-19) used a screw on cap. 8MTH-7220

The New Process 435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) twists off with a quarter turn. Two pins in the upper portion of the shift tower are what holds the cap on.

>> Note: If the 460 engine is original to a 1973/82 F Series truck, it will have a C6. Manual transmission 460's didn't appear till 1983. <<
