have a 2000 f350 auto PSD with 54k that I've owned since new. I have a lawn care buisness and pull a 20' flatbed car hauler that I'm guessing with sides and equipment is probably 5-6000 lbs. Has napa/donaldson filter in place of factory. Driving home tonight at 65 mph thought I felt a surge once or twice. Later after turning onto another road and accellerating a little agressive the thing down shifted as hard as any auto tranny I've felt before and I felt power waver/surge slightly and looked in my rear view to see a cloud of dark exhaust as if I had floor the accel. and held it there. Turned in to the drive about a half mile later and noticed the idle sounded higher and guage showing about 950 rpms and it sounded and felt rough like a dead cyl. After idling for about four min. went back to normal. Took it out for another test drive and after a few miles same story without the hard down shift. Not feeling much of a loss of power if any at highway speeds but I'm being pretty gentle with it till I know whats happing. Thought I'd start with a fuel filter which I know is already a little behind in being replaced. All guages show ok and now warning lights. Any thoughts?

When you try to accelerate, and the PCM senses that the engine isn't making enough torque, the PCM initiates a so called "torque demand downshift" to a lower gear to get the necessary torque that way. If you're normally able to accelerate under these conditions in the higher gear without the PCM downshifting, and it just started doing it, it sounds like the engine isn't putting out the same torque as before under the same conditions.
The black smoke usually means it's too rich, either less air or more fuel. I think I read somewhere that a clogged or sticking injector can cause the PCM to over fuel the rest in an attempt to make up the difference.
I'd check the basics first, air and fuel filter, and fresh engine oil and filter, as it never hurts to do these anyway. I'd also add a X2 dose of Stanadyne, for a few tanks. I use a X1.5 on a regular (every tank) basis.
It would helpful if you could read the fault codes..There is good chance it store one or more. Knowing the fault code, there are alot of good guys and gals here on the forum that could trouble shoot for you..
Air filter has less than 1000 miles on it and oil change was done about 500 miles ago. Did pull a code with an old super chip programer (which has not been used on this truck for approx 10k) and it pulled a P1211. My wifes X PSD, on a different note, shows a 1260 and 1000, which I'm pretty sure one has to do with theft security key sys. because unless I clear them the theft light flashes and the truck crank but won't start. Cracked the f350's fuel drain for a 10 sec. count and add some diesel additive to an already full tank. I plan to pick up a new fuel filter today from Napa. I'll update my progress. thanks
