My cousin has a 87 4x4 Yota pick-em up typical 4 popper 22R 5spd etc. We just replaced a blown headgasket, and now we have a no-start condition. There is no spark at the coil, or any of the plug wires. We've replaced the Igniter module under the coil, the coil itself and even tried jumping the coil out with no success. When we jumped the coil, all it did was make something click under the hood on the passenger side, and turned on the charge light on the instrument cluster. Nothing else we've tried has worked.
So, instead of kicking back with a cold one tomorrow and blowin stuff up, i'm going to spend it under the hood with my multi-meter to see WTF is wrong with this thing.
My son and I have become resident experts on Toyota wiring! He owns an 87 Supra that has been a pain in the backside. More danged eeelectrical issues than you can shake a stick at. BUT, we got it going! Without seeing the engine itself, what were the pre-existing conditions that caused you guys to pull the head? (He's also got an 89 pickemup truck with the same motor as y'alls) Did you miss any grounds? Pop any fuses? I blew an alternator fuse on his car once when I bumped the cable with a crescent and grounded it to something else. Pain to remove, but the whole danged car has been a pain, but fun to work on. Does the starter engage at all? That clicking is probably a relay or something, but without looking in the book, I don't know off the top of my nugget. Okay, maybe we're not experts, but we can "arrange" wiring to make it work for certain!
Wow! I had completely forgotten about this thread. For those of you still curious about the issue, we had to replace the ignitor again. That got us fire, but still not enough compression to fire it off. So the head came back off again for the 2nd time. We sent out for a reman head. And now it runs...apparently it had some stuck valves. So all is good now.
