New here guys,I was wondering if I could get some advice. I have a 96 350 crewcab, dually,I love this truck. she is almost back to mint cond.,but anyway
its gotta 5 speed man. and I run 2600 rpm @ 70mph. and I would like to drop it down a bit,I wanted to switch to 3.73s but they tell me I can only go to 3.55s. I do haul trailers but not all day everyday, maybe the heaviest I ever
really haul is about 8500 to 9000 lbs. but i average about 5500 lbs.
I would say I pull only 6000 miles a yearout of 20,000 total.
would switching to the 3.55s ruin my haulin torque?
What are you running right now. I assume 4.10? 3.73 would be the next step down and 3.55 would be the lowest gearing I would use for any kind of towing.
3.55s in my 93 f150 auto run at 2000 rpm at 70 mph. I would say a set of 3.73s would give you 70 at around 2200 rpm. That seems good for highway cruising and the 3.73s are still good for towing.
yes,I do run 4.10s. my mechanic told me to find a complete axle assembly to switch it out,but junk yards keep telling me they didnt make 3.73 rearends for that year, which
is what I wanted to switch to. replies are appreciated

Find someone who's familiar with working on differentials. The mechanic told you to find a complete axle assembly so he doesn't have to rebuild the rear end.
A qualified mechanic should be able to rebuild your differential and swap your ring and pinion set with the ratio of your choosing. Without you having to dig up a junked rear end. Someone familiar with working on differentials can have you set up in a few hours of charged labor.
If you have 12 bolts on the back of the rear end- search for an R&P set for the Ford 10.25" rear end. If it's 10 bolts its the Dana-70, Dana 70-U, Dana 70HD or Dana 80 rear end. The 10.25 and Dana 70 U have aftermarket and OEM ring and pinion sets at 3.73. I'm not sure about the other rear ends.
