Transmission Identification
Transmission Identification
(Insert tranny identification joke here)
So my dad and I have always wanted to build a car together, and we're going to look at a '54 F100 tomorrow. The seller says it has a 351 Windsor in it with a T4 transmission.
From what I've read (wikipedia):
the 351 Windsor and 351 Cleveland small and intermediate-block engines were backed by the medium-duty FMX. A few C4s were built with a big-block bellhousing to use with Ford 335 engines, notably the 351M, but these are very rare
My question is, how can we identify this tranny? I hope it's a T4, because I've read that they're durable and simplistic, which makes them a customizers dream. But I want to be able to positively identify it's actual design. Do these older cars come with stamps or ID decals? I'm assuming the engine and tranny are at least '65, maybe even later.

Many Ford cars with 351C 2V's used C4's, and 1977/78 Ford LTD/Mercury Marquis, and 1977/79 T-Birds, Cougars, LTD II's with 351M's also used C4's.

There is NO such Ford transmission as a T4, someone prolly means C4.
Regardless of what Wiki says,
351W's came with a C4, FMX or a C6 as original. All 1975 and later Econolines with 351W's used a C6 till the advent of AOD's. When the 351W was introduced in 1969 (cars), it came with an FMX, but from 1970, a C4 was also used on some models. On the left side of the transmission case is a metal tag. There will be a 4 or 5 letter Ford ID number beginning with the letter P (example: PHB-E). Post that ID code, I can tell you what the trans is and what it's from.
Ford passenger cars used 351W's from 1969. Econolines used 351W's from 1975, F Series trucks used 351W's from 1980.

While Ford may not have used the T4 in Trucks, there is such an animal, it predates the T5 Overdrive used in the Mustangs.
The T4 is a straight 4 speed, alumimum case top shifter.
I'm not sure of the numbers for hte ID.
If it is a C4 look to ND's info above.
