Engine swap

I have a 1990 F150 4x4 with a 303 and auto trans( aod ). Is it possible to swap this engine with a 351M 1979 vintage, and if so, what all is involved. Thanks.

Hey JB, welcome to FTE.

I assume when you say 303 that you meant 302 (correct me if I am wrong). It's possible to put most any engine you like in there but for ease of installation I'd go with a 351W. The windsor is the same block as the 302, so all your accessories will bolt right to it the same way. It'll also bolt right up to your tranny, although you should check on the balance on the flexplate since there was a difference in the balanced weights depending on which year windsor you got. If you plan on keeping your EFI setup I don't know what you'd run into trying to put that on a 351M, or even if it is possible to do so. Also the windsor has more aftermarket support than the modified does.

Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Ron

The 302 and 351m do not use the same tranny. The 351m use a 429/460 bellhousing.
