94 Explorer XLT with 160K orginal miles. I have been losing coolant but no visable signs. Daughter just came home and said the truck was smoking. Pull the hood and found the water level OK but lots of steam.
Closer inspection put steam coming from area directly under intake manifold. Looking at the engine from the front the area in question is to the right of the thermostate housing and behind what I think is a temp sensor. It is pretty much dead center of the engine.
Question is, intake or head gasket? How difficult to DYI (shop is quoting over $1K for the job without looking. Any other posibilities.
Water level okay, no water in oil, I'd consider replacing the thermostat. Sounds like it could be stuck shut to me.
I would have thought that also but in this case I am seeing steam coming from behind the outlet housing by about 8 inches. I'm still thinking intake gasket.
