I have a 87 F250 with a 351. I am having major problems trying to get
this truck to idle right. When I put he truck in reverse or drive, it
wants to stall and sometimes will. With the truck in park it will idle high but the idle floats all over the place. While I was looking for a vacuum leak I saw this small canister on the intake manifold just to the left of the carb. It has a vacuum line going to it and a small metal arm coming out of the other side witch is linked to a lever that gose into the manifold. It looks like it opens an closes a valve in the manifold but why? Any suggestion on what might be causing the idle problem.
I may be wrong (as usual) but I think that that unit on the intake operates the choke on the carb.
Aside from that, I would look for a vacuum leak. I read another post somewhere, where the rough idle prob was finally discovered in a faulty power brake booster.
my 86 has EFI but it also idles all over the place
if you have a power brake booster problem would you hear what sounds like an air leak near the pedal
if thats not a brake problem can u point me in the right direction about the air leak
