I have a 96 F350 dully with a utility box on the back. When I signal both rear signals light up but faintly but the front ones work fine. It doesn't matter if I signal left or right, they both light up and flash, just dimmer than they should be.
You have a bad ground in your rear signals. When you signal, the current takes the path of least resistance. Normally this involves a firmly attached ground wire. In your case it is going through the other light bulb because the ground is no good. I had a Mustang once that when I put my turn signal on, the front signals would flash really slow on both sides and the headlights would light very very dim. I tore the whole front end apart troubleshooting. It turned out to be a rusted ground screw right on top of the fender. I hate electrical problems.....
BadTriumph, you nailed it right on the head. I check and relized the lights were mounted on a sheet of steel that is riveted to the body of the truck. I could pull it and it would get a good ground and the lights would work fine. let go and they went back funky. So I took the welder and tacked it in a few places and problem solved. Thanks so much for you input. That made a tuff electrical problem an easy fix.
Hey basecamp, You're welcome. I'm glad it worked out for you without too much trouble. When I read your initial post I had visions of the front end of Mustang all ripped apart for the sake of one easily accessible screw. What a pain! Now I don't feel like it was a total waste if I could help someone else out....
