Starting probs.

1999 F-250, V-10 auto..

Recently on first start up in the morning. I will turn key, the motor will try to start sounds like it grumbles and fires erraticly then imeadiatly shuts off. On the next try it starts up fine. Yesturday on the first try it did not even fire, I turned the key, engine turned over but not even a fire. then on the second try is started up.

Fuel pump comes on with key in "on" position,
I am going to change the fuel filter, but now I am looking into possibly a fuel pump?

Oh and the only trouble code spit out is for p0402 I think, The one for unsufficeint exaust gas resurculation flow detected,

thanks for any help

Joe

Welcome to the site.

Don't just throw parts at the situation. Perform some tests and narrow the problem down to fuel or spark.

OK.. I was working through the fuel trouble shooting tree,

What would give an indication of a problem with "spark"
tests etc. It only fails to start on the first attempt of the day.

Next time you cold-start it, press the gas pedal a 1/2 or one inch or so and see if it starts right up.

If it does, that's the IAC sticking - just replace it. While you're in there, make sure it's ports are clear of carbon.

That is what I was wondering.

Joe, try the suggestion that Art made to see if it helps.

Nope that did not work,

Pressed in the pedal like described.

The motor starts and grumbles at 5 to 700 rpm for a second or two then runs up to 1500-2000, before dropping back down idle.

Same problem as before.

No it did not die, but it did not start up like normal.

last week it would have a hard time starting and not die, just as it is doing now with the pedal pressed slightly.

If I were to make a guess, I'd say the throttle-body, IAC and EGR valve may be gummed up and preventing proper operation. Rather than buying new parts, you might be able to just clean the old ones.

NoMo, thanks for jogging my memory about the EGR - the '99's usually have one.

I wonder if it's leaking?

Pull the vacuum line off the EGR valve. See if there's any vacuum there at idle.

With the vacuum line off and plugged, see if it's still idling/starting poorly.

Then, while at idle, apply vacuum (a piece of rubber hose and your mouth will work ) to the EGR and see if the engine stumbles or runs rough. If not, the EGR is clogged, and maybe leaking.
