Heres the situation My 93 IDI turbo diesel started knocking lately and Ford wants $700-$1200 for a fix they think it might be possibly the injector they said?
I was going up a hill no load at about 45mph(const zone) when something sounded as it was coming loose then it sounded as something broke and it started to knock some puilled over and found no fluid leaks and oil level was good drove it back home another 10 miles slowly and the knock was louder with the motor running my daughter sitting in the passenger seat said it sounds as if something was getting thrown around so I got out and stood on the passenger side of the vehicle when I heard the same as if something was getting knocked around when idelnig.
Any others out there have a clue of what it might be? I 2weeks earlier paid $3000 to repair injector-pump-fuel and all oil leaks buy pulling out the motor a major fuel leak happened after one of the injector plastic covers went bad it was gushing fuel out by the end of the day they fixed that then this!

are you mechanically inclined ?? there are tests that you can do at the home garage before getting raped by a garage. it is hard to diagnose a knock in a diesel engine because they are knocking all the time.
you could short out each cylinder and determine which side is causing the problem. to short out a cylinder you loosen the fuel line nut on top of each injector - one at a time with the engine at idle. if there is no difference after you see fuel leaking from the nut, that will be the problem cylinder. the problem could be a stuck injector a worn injector or a problem in the valve train.
might also be in the new injection pump too.
be careful as you work around the idling engine so you dont get caught up in moving parts while performing the above tasks. the fuel line nuts will take a 5/8 wrench and the one with the adapter on it will take 2 wrenches to loosen the fuel line at the top.
seems to have minimal power loss but havent tried much after knocking sound. kinda babied it since and havent driven since, starts well still runs but...
Has aroun 280000+ miles and just stock oil pressure gauge which seems to be in same zone which is normal.
Could be a valve ......they will wear the guides and end up dropping down and not returning completely into the head.....thus the piston hits the valve due to almost zero clearance... might have to do a comprssion test.
Other thought could be a GP tip is in the cylinder either from previous removal or new broken tip.......have you replaced GPs recently.
Manual 5spd ZF5 that was replaced about 1-1/2 years ago havent messed with the gp's in a while cause the trucks been starting good.
Again ford said it might be one of the fuel injectors, it did have a blue smoke issue and was going to take it in for that but when that knocking noise happened the smoke almost went away not all of it but alot of it, if that helps any on figuring out the problem.
after getting the oil and fuel leaks fixed I started to have one of the injectors leak which was fixed but still had an issue of blue smoke which I never had before taking the truck in after the 'knocking' sound the blue smoke pretty much went away any ideas on what could cause this?
Sounds like one of the injectors was not closing completely.
The fuel was just draining into the cylinder when it should not be causing the smoke.
The knock may be from compression getting into the injector because the pintle is not closing at all now.
byrd, short out each cylinder and see which is causing the problem. As Dave stated, it does sound like an injector not working properly. One cylinder will sound like the devil is trying to get out when an injector is acting up.
If you have high mileage on the engine without previous maintainance, that would be a good bet on the injectors. You could also use a heavy dose of diesel kleen or some fuel conditioner to help clean it up, BUT, if the injectors are galled, you cant fix em with additive.
Ford wants $700-$1200 to check all injectors and fix just the ONE thats bad Im guessing that ONE might be broke? Well I think that might be too much and would rather replace all the injectors with new ones thats recommended by those here and maybe go else where to get it done dont you think and shoul it really cost what theyre asking?
Oh and no previous service of the injectors have been done

That is an absolute screwing, you can buy new injectors for about 250 retail and I bet if you ask around some will help you out for a few bucks or brews, hell you could almost buy me a plane ticket to do it cheaper. Geez I hate dealerships.
I was not believing them but in a bind I thought this the way to go but after talking here and letting the dissapointment of the truck making that nasty sound pass I realize they want too much and will not get the work done there. I will buy parts myself and go from there but I will have to look around for help on this 'two heads are better than one'
