Alrighty, I have tried to find info on this and as per usual I am unable to. My 88 F150 4x4 with the 5 Spd Tranny and the inline 300. I can shift from 2-H, N, 4-H and 4-L, but there is alot of play in the shifter. I am thinking the linkage might be rusted up and will be checking that, however, when I am in 2wd with the hubs unlocked, I get alot of rattling, metal on metal sound coming from the transfer case which is really obvious and loud in 5th gear. When I move the shifter a little towards me, the sound stops. The truck does not seem to be losing power when the sound is going on, but I'd rather fix it as it can't be good. I recently changed the fluid in the tranny, the sound was there before that, I have not yet changed the fluid in the transfer case but I will be.
So aside from linkage, are there any gears that usually wear out on the transfer cases in these trucks? I assume its the stock transfer case, but I will get the number for you guys tomarrow sometime.
My first guess would be the linkage has started to come loose over time, especially if the sound stops when you hold the shifter. I'd pursue that first. Just get underneath (or lift the boot) while the truck is turned off and jiggle different parts of the linkage to try and narrow it down.
You've got a warner 1356 transfer case, and it sounds like the ol oil pump spinning problem. Very common with older cases. This site shows one fix, on mine I just drilled a hole thru the case, anchored the new pump and sealed the bolt w/silicone. The other issue is the shift "cam" inside the box wears it's pivot so it can literally be partially in or out gear. BW fixed that in the early 90s with a different pivot lock. repaired mine here also, with a 10/32 allen head bolt and shim washers to keep it from flopping. Works fine now.
