tranny costs?

Am looking into buying a 03 F-250 7.3 ps with about 94,000 miles the only issue is the automatic tranny seem to be slipping between 3-4th I took it to aamco and was quoted at $1800 rebuilt everything except for the torque converter add another $700 if the tc is replaced my ? is does this price sound right?
I currently have a 93 7.3 IDI with 280,000+ miles and think its time to let that go as I think I am getting a good price on that one.

If the truck is cheap enough, buy it and call BTS. You'll never worry about the tranny again. Price sounds good, as dealer charges close to $3k for a replacement (tranny + labor).

I spent ~$850 getting mine redone a couple of years ago. If i ever need to do it again, I am calling BTS. Of course, its more $$$$, but money well spent.

A really good tranny is gonna cost you 4k, so think about that when you make your counteroffer. 20k seems steep, but that depends on where you are and the condition of the truck. is it 2wd or 4wd? is it completely stock? what do the oasis and carfax reports say?

The truck is in really good condition and is 4x4 I knew the guy when he bought it and I never saw it dirty the only mods I know of are the rear airbags for the leaf springs and a reaar cab 'headache' rack

Check with Ford on a reman unit. I replaced mine about 6 mos ago. I got a good deal on it b/c my buddy works for a dealer. I pd around 1800 W T/C but i think list was around 2300. The reason i went with that one was they have a 3 yr 75k warranty that is good at any Ford dealer no matter who installed it. Most shops were about the same price with only a 12/12 warranty.

guess there are other options besides aamco so I should do more homework. I was never one to worry OR get warranties or the like but as I get older I dont want to get stranded somewhere and maybe Ford stealerships might be the way to go as they are in most places.

i know how you feel. but if you go to Ford, make sure and read the fine print and ask lots of questions because the 12/12 warranty is the default.

Yeah, thats why I went with the dealer. they're alot easier to find especially in small towns as opposed to national or indie shops and the cost really was'nt any more. btw that price didn't include labor but it should only be 4-5 hrs flag rate. I bought the tranny and had an indie shop install it. (Thanksgiving eve, 200 miles from home very long story)

In my opinion, I would stay the heck away from Aamco!

If you want a terrific trans, with an unbeatable warranty, give either John Wood, or BTS a call. You just can't go wrong with either of them.

<O
I know John Wood has a price of $2900 as one of his options, and it comes with a 6.4 converter, good for 375 hp. If you want him to pull your old one, and install the new, add a $400 labor cost. I believe the warranty period is 75,000 miles, you break it, he fixes it, no question asked! <O

One of the things I like about both John Wood & BTS both, is if you bring your truck in for them to do, you can stay there that day and see exactly what they are installing, and the custom work they do to improve our transmissions.<O

In my case, I drove down to John Wood’s place that day, and watched as he milled out custom part, after part for my transmission. While there, I spent the day learning more about the 7.3, than I ever knew before.

When I drove home that evening, I was much impressed with the end results and knew I had one of the best-made transmissions available anywhere, at any price!
<O

I still am!
<O

Good luck,<O

Richard

Well, I spoke with Brian from BTS (Brians Truck Shop) yesterday on the phone. He was vgery nice and answered all my questions and then some. The reputation he has on this board is very good and that means a lot to me. I would go with him or John Wood depending on who was closer. Stay away from Aamco.

I cant seem to find John Wood on the computer but both of those getting high marks as I check past posts and well aamco isnt my 1st choice but they did offer the FREE diagnostic. I guess the warranty in relation to my location in Albuquerque, NM is the factor? Thanks too all you guys and gals you're all great

Here is Johns web address. http://jwtt.com/

I see you're in NM, so I guess it would be a toss up as to who would be closer, but you really wouldn't do wrong with either choice, of these guys.
