ok. I have a question. first what was the standard size tire for the 64 ford f1002wd manual tans. the reason i am asking isi just found out that the tires on the back an front are two different sizes. the frons are 235/75/15's and the backs are a bias ply 7.00-16. now i didnt know that the backs were bias ply or i woulnt be driving it. what i want to know is, whats the equivalent radial size for the 7.00-16. i looked on tire rack but their charts only go up to 15's. same with discount tire.
15" wheels were standard on 1961/66 F100's 2 or 4 WD. Ford didn't offer radial tires on F Series trucks till the late 1970's. Original bias ply tire size: 6 70 x 15.
No American vehicle had radials as standard equipment till 1966. Radials were standard equipment on only two vehicles in the 1960's. 1966 Olds Toronado, 1967 Cadillac El Dorado. Both were FWD.
First radial tires: Michelin. First car to use Michelins: 1955 Citroen ID 19.

that brought back old memories, I put radials on my 57custom 300 in 1968 (BF Goodrich 990 lifesavers I believe, everytime I went to the gas station they would tell me my tires were low, and I would tell them NO its a radial, and they would look at me like I was crazy
There are quite a few 235 75R 15s run on our trucks. 5 lug 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern was used through 96, so if you like some of the later model wheels, you bees in luck.
i think i am gona try to round up a pair of 16" rims . wanna go to 17" eventually or maybe just get a speedo geer to correct the speedo. and stick with 15" on the front and 16" on the back. dont know. just tryn to find out what the 7.00-16 converts to in a metric or even just find out what 16" tire is as tall as a 235/75R15 so then my speedo is correct.
235/75R15 height is the same as 235/75R16. The number after the "R" is just the size of the rim (in inches). Kind of odd that metric tire sizing uses inches for rim size. The breakdown is as follows: P (or LT); Passenger car tire (LT=Light Truck), 235; width of the tire (in mm) from widest point to widest point, 75; aspect ratio of sidewall height (the larger the number, the taller the sidewall) R = Radial tire, 16 = rim size, in inches. So, to break down your numbers: 235/75R15 = 235mm tire width, sidewall height is 75% of the width, or 176.25mm, Radial tire, 15 inch rim. If my calculations are correct, to keep the same OD size, you need a 235/70R16
my 64 custom cab came with 16" rims for one reason or another. I spoke with a tire shop some time ago about speedo problems with different tire sizes. The general opinion is that unless you are making a large jump in tire size, the calibration of your speedo is not going to change very much (within 1 or 2 mph). To answer your question, the 235/70R16 is the same total height as the 235/75R15. It is importaint to purchase the tires beginning with "LT" if one intends to haul/tow. "P" tires (passanger car) dont have nearly the load rating that the LT tires have. The 235/xxR15 series tires should fit the 7.00 rims just fine.
If you want to keep your rear rims, which I assume are the old 5.5 x 16 tubeless which originally came with 6.50-16 tires (30" OD), the only choice you have is either 235/75R16s (OD=30.6) or 235/70R16 (29"OD). Anything wider will not go on that rim. Even the 235s are supposed to be on at least a 6" rim, but I have some on the old 5.5s and they work fine. The 700s you've got are around 30.8" OD - probably taller than your original tires, and much taller than your front tires (235/75R15 = 29" OD)
To have your speedo be correct you'd probably need 30" tires like the original 650s (which haven't been available for years, BTW), so take your pick.
If you want to gain a little road speed over original go with the 235/75 series (still closer to original OD than your 700s)
If you want to match the fronts go with the 235/70 series (29" OD)
hmmmmmmm..... thanx. i might just end up using these rims for a while. thanx again guys. you all are real big helps to young guys like me who really think these trucks are the cats meow.
