Thinking Bronco...

Hello all,
As my signature says, I'm hoping to get a F250 diesel here soon, however I have gotten the Bronco bug again. this time I'd like to maybe look at a big bronco, rather than a BII.

So I have a few questions, in the f150, they didn't get 5spd manual's until 88, is this the same with Bronco's? How rare are 5spd Bronco's in 88-91 years?
I don't plan on doing much wheeling, but I used to have a 31 all-terrian tire on my f150, that was great for pasture driving, and road driving, with miminmal cut on gas. Actually, I never saw a cut in gas...would this work for a Bronco? It was a BF Goodwhich All-terrian 31 size tire, on stock 15" rim, with no lift. I don't have plans for lift either.
With that in mind, what kind of gas mileage would I expect with a 302? I don't have a need for the big 351, and I loved my 302 in the f150.

Not sure bout the 5 spd in 88-91, but someone will be along soon.

As for the tires yes. I run 31x10.50 AT on my stock 92 FSB with not lift, and you can stuff 32 in there but things get a little tight.

As for the 302 vs 351. I run a 302 in my FSB and for daily driving and light off road use it suits me fine. However my gas mileage sucks!!!! Don't expect much over 12mph and I was usually around 10. The bigger 351 actually gives you better mileage because they have more low end torque and can get these big heavy trucks moving better. Just something to think about.

Just a suggestion on tires. Yes a 31x10.50R15 would be a good size for a stock bronco with no lift, but I would not suggest BFG A/Ts. They are way to expensive, and suck. A off brand all terrain would work just as good, but cost a lot less.

I think your right about the 5 speed coming out in 88, b/c I've seen a 89 w/ a 5 speed.

IF you keep your bronco in good runing condition with regular tune ups, you could get about 15 mpg on the hwy if you take it very easy with either the 302 or 351W.
If you plan on driving it around town alot with alot of stop and go, get the 351W, or at least make sure the axles have at least 3.50 gears. I've seen a few with 3.08 gears, and that's just a joke to have in these heavy off road trucks.

the only 80-96 bronco's to come with a 5 speed were the ones with the 5.0 motors, and the 5 speeds were the japanese r470w's If I remember right, but they were the japanese tranny. no 351w bronco's were offered with a manual trans.

If you MUST have a manual trans, i'd rather grab a 5.8L truck and do a manual trans swap, but your choices imo are limited for true good 5 speed trannies.

Yeah, I don't have the time or cash to do a manual swap. Though it'd be fun after the fact. Maybe I'll stick to the diesel. I really want a Bronco, but if they are that rare....
But, at least I know they are behind the 5.0's. Thats my favorite Ford motor.
