I finally got a chance to look at this today, as I've been wondering the same thing. I want to switch my 2004 vents to 2006 vents...I think the newer ones are a lot better design!
If you look inside the vent there are two small tabs on the left and right. Slide one tab over while pulling on the side of the vent and hold once it is free. This will keep the one side free while you move to the other side and release the other tab. Then just pull it out of the dash (being careful not to damage the foam on the end as you remove it).
I used a pick with a 90 degree angle as it has a point. You could probably use a flat screwdriver, but the tabs are small so I think the point helped. Otherwise it was very easy. I hope this helps.
