Cleaning fuel from your hands

I'm a recent new diesel owner and I've noticed some stations don't keep their pump nozzles clean. Some better than others, but it can be a messy affair to fuel up. Mostly I don't want to get my truck interior smelling like diesel, especially the steering wheel. I was thinking some kind of spray bottle would be nice so you could spray your hands and use the station paper towels to clean up at the pump and avoid a trip inside to the restroom.

How do you guys handle that? Any soap you would recommend? BTW, I don't think the usual waterless hand cleaner would get my hands clean enough for the office, at least not the ones I've tried. Or would they?

Thanks,
Bill

Keep an old pair of leather or rubber gloves for fueling up and throw them in the back when your done.

A pair of medical exam gloves will fit in behind the fuel flap and can be disposed of. I tried the gloves in the back thing but they slide around making them hard to reach, plus they tend to get soaked in the rain.

I do carry gloves, but don't put them in the back. I don't have a tool box or cap or anything back there and they would just get wet. Plus, putting them inside the cab would defeat the purpose as far as smell is concerned.

I found some Clorox wipes at the store and I think I'm going to try those. I like them because they are moist, but there is no free liquid to leak out on the carpet. It fits under the rear seat pretty good and if it rolls around it won't matter. Using them and then drying with the service station towels should be okay. I would have preferred wipes that were alcohol based so it would quickly evaporate and no need for paper towels. But I think it will be okay. My second idea is a spray bottle of cleaner in a box in the back in the box with the DK bottles.

Thanks for the ideas,
Bill

Wet ones can be a good cleaning tool.

I keep a pair of gloves in the door pocket right under the door handle. The smell only becomes a problem after they've gotten REALLY soaked with fuel. The problem, I've found, is KEEPING the gloves in the pocket... I tend to find all sorts of other uses for them, as well.

Hey, wet ones is a good idea! Aren't they for baby butts or something? I had forgotten about those. The Clorox wipes came from home depot. I think wet ones might work better. I was thinking the ideal thing would be the wet naps you get at the BBQ place, if only they were bigger. The lemon cuts the oil but it evaporates fast.

Thanks

Which ever cleaning wipe you use, make sure it has alcohol in it. Normal baby-wipes do NOT have it, and that's what cuts the oil. About all baby wipes will do is smear it around, make your hands greasy, and smell funny.

Chicks dig diesel fuel. No need for them baby butt cleaners. Just dab some behind your ears and see the results.

get a box of diposible medical exam gloves, or food service gloves, they are usually packed 100 to the box and you only need one per fill up. the box is small enough fit under the seat or in the console if so equiped. Pretty cheap too, about $4 to $7 for a box of a hundred.

I keep wet ones in all three of my vehicles. But I also keep the old leather gloves in the door pocket with the air gauge in the deisel.

Maybe I go to the wrong place to fill up my truck but 99%of the time there are NO papertowels in the dispenser nor window cleaner in the bucket. If they are available use the window washing solution to wash your hands then dry with the towels or just suck it up and live with that wonderful diesel smell. rugerman

Ha! I would drench my hands in fuel before I would put them in that window washer tub! That's bug-gut soup dude. Thanks for the giggle.
