Cooling problem

Hey guys, I just put in a new radiator into my 2000 Explorer and while I was in there I replaced the water pump and thermostat and all the hoses and serp. belt. My problem now is that we got driving it for a little while yesterday and all of a sudden the temp. gauge started goiing up then back down. And at one time I stop to check everything out under the hood the upper hose was collapsed. But once it set for a few seconds the gauge came back down and stayed in the middle. And just sitting in the drive way with all the accessories on trying to get it to get hot and work it. The gauge did not move. I am thinking that I have an air pocket in the system that needs to be worked out. Anyone else have this problem. Oh I forgot, if it helps, it has a V-8.
Thanks Stephan

Did you install the hole in the thermostat at the 12:00 position?

There was no hole in the thermostat. I bought one from advanced and it was the cheaper one. could that be my problem.

Unhappy

Now I just drive around and the guage moves up and down. And I know that it will move around but now, the guage that is, seems to move alot more than before I did all this work when it would barely move at all. It will climb up above the thermometer and then go right back down to the middle fo the guage.

Thanks Stephan

do you have enough coolant in it? Is the thermostat installed correctly, some vehicles it can be installed up-side-down.

I did install the thermostat correctly, I did doubt myself there at first but I read my manual and also it had an arrow pointing towards the radiator which helped. There is enough fluid. I filled it all the way up to the top.

Sure does sound like a thermostat problem... I read here a while back that someone had one or two aftermarket duds... if they are not too expensive that is where I would start.

How about replacing the collapsed hose? Does it feel real soft? Often they have a spring inside to prevent that. You can boil some water, put the thermostat in and see if it is opening and closing good.

Just had the same problem with my 2000 muntaineer 4 liter. Check and see if part of the old therostat is still in the bottom of the housing. Mine had a second disk on the bottom that closes off the pump bypass when the stat is open. That disk fell off. and the tempture would go all the way to the top and then return to normal.

I checked everything out and did not find anything else in the housing or the intake.

And the upper hose is brand new and the original did not have any springs in it to help.

The guage has stopped fluctuating so bad, it is down to a minimun now, took it for a hour long drive yesterday and the guage did not move at all while driving a 60, but slow down to about 40-45 maybe a little slower for a short period and the guage moved a little bit.

Thanks STephan
