I think if you want to do it right, it can be nothing less than an FE 427. Aluminum blocks, heads (Keith Craft ports 'em to flow like crazy), and intakes are all available. Stroker kits are available to get big cubic inches. Roller cams, valve train parts, it's all out there. All it takes is money.

Even a properly built 390 would make it cook and IMO look a lot better than some small block.

Stop by the FE forum if any of this interests you.

An FE big block can be stuck in there without any cutting, for sure. 385 series, I'm not too sure about, but I think it will fit without cutting, too. Only 65-66's were too small for big blocks.

a 427 windsor stroker twin turbo would be the best all around. keep it at 6psi for crusing and then turn it up to 20 for some serious.......well you know what.

my .02

i think if youre not worried about money- go for the stroked all aluminum 460... it should fit between the shock towers but im not sure it will fit under the hood... 460s are narrower than fes but a bit taller... if you have to chop the hood anyways you could go for the big blower too... go all out and have 1000 horse lol

Sounds like a nice project. One of the clients from our shop stopped by with his GT500E from Unique Performance. What a sweet car. They started with a C code 68 fastback and he opted for a 67 louvered Shelby hood. Nicely built 302 under hood with 400hp and TKO tranny. The rear swaybar is HUGE!!! He claims the car is one of the 5 cars used in the movie but I'm not sure about that one LOL. Maybe he means "just like" the ones in the movie??? At any rate the car is a beauty! I'd love to build one myself. Good luck and please keep us updated.

A small block will breath very easily and make big hp but the big block doesn not breath as well with out new ports however the big block makes the small block hp down low along with a mountian of torque makes for excellent drivability and easy to drive with the exception of weight that may effect cornereing. You can get 505 continuous torque from 1500-5500 rpm and 529 hp out of a 460 easily! I wonder how a mustang with this motor woud do up against a Ferarri or othere 500 hp sports car with 500 hp and what 350 tq or so at 7000 rpm? I understand mirrors do not stay on forever!

a 390 or 428 woud be good too or even a 427 coud you get one! Windsors with roller cams too! With aluminum heads it does not matter they make big hp!

I wonder how a 6.9/7.3L IDI diesel with big cam, 30 lbs of boost, headers, ++ pump at 4000 or 5000 rpm over 1500 tq and whatever hp! That 1200 lbs probably would not fit, handle difficultly, would need serios sterling rear end, might not get traction, may be good dragster but nothing else I think!

the 460 breathes quite well. There are many stock heads, that with a minor port job will easily allow 500hp. The stock manifolds are said to be good for up to 12 second 1/4 mile et's w/a 460 in a fox body mustang. I think it was the torquer II intake that will fit a 460 under the factory hood on a fox body mustang.
Given the same HP, a 460 will make it alot easier than a smallblock will...less stress, longer engine life.
http://fordifiedracing.homestead.com/bigblockfox.html heres a link to all kinds of 460 info. A good place to start.

if you have a little money and time check out www.proformanceunlimited.com. they have some AMAZING motors. For your car, i would say the 351 windsor bored and stroked to a 418. the proformance unlimited 418 has 500 horse, and that would be plenty for *** kicking.

http://www.tpitotalperformance.com/

Click on featured cars, then '68 Mustang. It is amazing the number of

Yep, if you can get through the first few minutes of "Porno Acting" in the original 1974 "Gone in 60 Seconds" it may still be the best car chase movie of all time. Got to love watching that Yellow 1973 351C 4V HO (R-Code) Mach I.

The remake was so disappointing....

Go with a 385 series big block

Check 460ford.com lots and lots of good reading there! IMHO the 429 460 based engines are the only way to go, Crites makes the headers motor mounts. It is a tight fit but I have lots of friends that have done it. Jon Kasse just released a new 385 head called P51 aluminum factory ported. Get ya a 460 block these heads and a 460" to 557" rotating assy.and a custom ground cam. I will sure live up looks of the car and you will think that you had more tq. than a modded 6.0 HAVE A GREAT DAY GOD BLESS B.C.
