I am looking at taking the '79 302 my bro-in-law gave me and tear it down and put it in my ranger. Here's my question, Should I go back 306 (prolly has to be bored .030 over) or go ahead and install the stroker kit I was looking at in summit catalog. And as far as the head either way I go I was looking at using the stock heads for now just porting them and such.
My deal is once I put the engine in the truck I won't wanna take it back out to work on the crank and such. Any ideas/ opinions on the stroking?
You may want to do some more research. 347s have a reputation for being very hard on bearings and conn rods. This is not an issue for racers who do an annual rebuild, but it may or may not be significant to you. If you really want that kind of displacement why not just get a 351? The much better rod/stroke ratio and ready availability of parts make it a better idea anyway.
I've been told a 347 won't make it past 20k miles. I think a 331* stroker kit has a better reliability reputation. If you want more than 331* than get the 351.
*I think it's 331, I know it's three hundred and thirty ...something...but i'm not 100% sure if it's a 1.
