Alright fellers, I've searched your forums high and low but have had no luck finding the holy grail I've been searching for :-( So the question is, has anybody tried supercharging a super duty?
I have an 04 F250 FX4 automatic with the 5.4L 2 valve and 3.73's. It just doesnt seem to have enough power for me. So I've been long comtemplating converting it to a Lightning 5.4 or whipple charging, any suggestions?
Roush makes a nice unit for the F-150 5.4L. I've been thinking of calling then to see if the kit would fit the Super Duty and how much it would cost. It's about $6000 for the F-150, so I would expect it to be about the same if it fits.
Banks makes a power pack for the 5.4 i would give them a call and see how much every thing is. For the F-150 its 6,200.00 including supercharger, intercooler, headers, cat back exhaust and overnight postage for PCM calibration.
powerdyne superchargers have lots of problems. go to a mustang web site and read the reviews. the internal belts break, the bearings are crap. you can't rebuild them, you have to send them back to powerdyne with $800. make your own turbo kit. i am in the process of making one for mine. there is all kinds of room to work with. you can do it for $1000. more power too.
My big thing is turbos don't make the power until you are up into the R's. Thats the same problem my 5.4 has, I'm lookin towards a roots blower or a whipple charger to pick up the low end.
Now maybe its my inner jew lashing out, but I think if I found a lightning in the scrap yard and stole its PCM and injectors, in theory I should be able to dig up an Eaton M122 and have myself a blown Super duty for less than a grand. Anybody see flaws in this theory? Maybe twin M90's (found on a Grand prix, can pick up at a scrap yard for $100)?
Getting a complete Lightning motor, PCM, and harness might be easier. But the tranny stands in your way. You have a 4R100.
That leaves you with an upgade kit for an F-series. Which I don't think exists, after doing some searching
Custom, here we go.
An intake and blower from a Lightning 5.4 and enough other stuff like the throttle body, and a custom tune to your existing PCM to keep with the 4R100 tranny, ABS, and everything else.

Do you think those factory injectors will keep up? My other concern is the compression ratio... I don't know much about this "modular V8" but I do know on GM 3800's there is a different compression ratio and cam.
Also, my 4R100 makes all sorts of funny *** noises, if I went to this supercharged setup, should I convert to a ZF series transmission?
you dont have to be in the upper rpms to have full boost. my 5.0l cobra has a t4 turbo and it has full boost by 2000rpms. a turbo will out perform a supercharger everyday of the week. do some research on turbos. trust me they are very fun.
there are many web sites out there. here is one http://turbochargedpower.com/Turbos%20Simplified.htm
check them out, then build your turbo kit. you will not be sorry
with a turbo you can adjust your boost with the push of a button or turn a ****, depends on what boost controler. run 5lbs of boost till someone starts to mess with you, turn it up to 10. takes 2 secs. whip his *** and then put it back down.

I doubt the stock injectors would be worth anything... the Lightning injectors would be a better fit - but then, you need an intake and blower anyway, so the injectors are just another add-on
The 4R100 makes WHAT kind of noises? There are shops that will bullet-proof the 4R100... for a price.
or just go with the 5r110(torqueshift) if you can stuff it in there... Those things will hold the diesel power...i don't forsee a strength issue holding the boosted 5.4
