Spring question

Ive come across a set of 6 inch lift springs out of a 1978 f250. I have a 68 f250 would the newer springs work? Ill have the brand and such in a bit.

I do believe they will work as long as you stick with the same yr. model rear diff, (different spring perch widths)

While this topic is open, I am curious what the sring length is on the 67-72 F-250's?
I have been using Super Duty springs in many of my 73-79 trucks, and I am curious whether or not they will fit the earlier trucks. Do you know the length eyelet to eyelet centerlin off hand?
This would be a good piec of information for all of us. The Super Duty sprimgs are everywhere, even used. They work like a champ in the next generation trucks (with little modification) and maybe they can work for you guys too.

The big problem with using later (and therefore wider) springs in our trucks is that the springs simply won't fit into the narrower spring mount on the frame. You'd have to swap the mounts as well, and they're riveted to the frame, which means cutting or grinding the rivet heads off and driving out the rivets (on both the donor truck and the truck the springs are being swapped into) and then bolting the wider mounts onto the bumpside with grade 8 bolts.

I haven't taken measurements to see if the holes line up between the two, so there's even the possibilty of having to drill some new holes...but I don't think so, at least on the front mounts for the rear springs. Rear mounts for the rear springs...well, Ford used kind of a strange shackle setup back there with a built-in overload. It may be possible to simply swap out that shackle, although you may have to get creative and modify it.

The front springs...might not be too bad actually. I don't recall if the bumpside front mount is bolted or riveted to the bottom of the frame rail but it should be pretty easy to remove and swap with an early dentside highboy front mount. The later mounts were a quite different and stronger design (I'm not sure of the change year, but I took the mounts pictured below off of a '77) which wraps around the frame horn instead of merely attaching underneath:

These mounts were a bolt-on, so they were easily removed. But I've seen the other version that looks like the bumpside mounts but wider on quite a few dentsides. (And believe me, I've looked at a lot of 4X4s in the wrecking yards lately...!)

As for the rear mounts on the front springs, they go through the frame and are riveted in with three rivets. You could remove them and replace them with the wider ones off a later truck (recommended) or simply use longer bolts with spacer between the ends of the shackles and the mounts to widen them out to accomodate the wider springs.

Anyway, that's all probably more than you wanted to know...

Thank you Number Dummy. That is valuable information. Using later model springs in the rear of these trucks would appear to be a little more difficult than most are willing to do. However with a little imagination and some time, one could find a rear spring from a bow tie dating bak from the early 70's right up to 91 that would work. As for the front. The Super Duty dpring will fit. It is 3 inches wide, and the right length. I have a 69 coming into the shop on Monday (I was so curious about this I weant an found one to experiment on) and we are going to install a complete kit for this. Instead of using older spring hangers, we decided to order a 2.5" hanger kit for the Super Duty, and bolt it up under the frame. Should work like a charm. we will then just bolt in the 6" Super Duty springs, and be on our way. Not looking too difficult so far. Already have the stuff for the x-over steering so this thing should be a snap. Not sure how the shackle angle is going to end up during complete suspension cysles, but if it turns out like the 73-79 trucks, it wil be easy as pie, and ride like it never has before.
These spring packs have 11 leafs, and flex like crazy, and the ride is second to none.
Springs are pretty chaep too.
