Weak batteries & cam sensor
My 2002 F-250, 7.3 would not start the other day so I jumped it with one of those expensive aux. starting units. When I turned the key on, ALL the guages pinned to the max. (even the speedo) then they returned to normal positions. After an unusual cranking time, it started up. No problems, all the guages looked normal. I parked it for the week, knowing I would purchase two new batteries this week. The old batteries are Motorcraft, perhaps original, I'm the second owner of the truck (115K miles). It has a new starter, no electronic problems indicated.
I attempted to start the truck this AM; same sequence of gauges pegging and it rolled over not quit at full strength I thought. Nothing, not even an attempt at firing! Is it possible I have killed the cam sensor? I carry a spare in the glove box (NAPA brand). I'm thinking of replacing the old one anyway because of the miliage. Is it possible the engine was not turning fast enough to catch? My experience with older machinery is that if it'll roll over at half-speed it'll catch.
What do you think? Thanks, Hank
I took the batteries to PASCO and had them tested; one tested "replace" (also it had a bulge in the end) and I figured the other couldn't be too far behind. I purchase two new ones; increased the CCA from 750 to 850, same physical deminsions. I will install them tonight and see what that does. I'm still thinking about replacing the cam sensor just because of the miles. Thank you for responding, Hank
