Question Transmission Problem? HELP

So I took my truk to my truck to the tranny/clutch shop the other day because it has a slight grind sometimes from 2nd to 3rd and sometimes into 4th. I thought maybe it was the clutch or through out bearing. So the guy drove it around for a min and then played with the clutch pedal for a few min. He told me that he thinks my clutch is perfect. It releases fine, has plenty of grab. BUT the tranny he says needs help (93 f-150 5spd mazda) He said that the syncros? and some spring in there are bad.

Question #1 I the tranny just going to die on me or will i have time to drive it untill i find a ZF 5spd to drop in there.
#2 How hard is it to replace those parts, and are they really expensive? He said it would be about $1500.00 for him to do it.
#3 What years ZF will fit, or is it ever possible to swap from mp5spd to the ZF?

It may be the shift forks not pushing you all the way out of gear. It what my was doing just before my forks went out.

so how do I inspect them or replace them (shift forks)?. I am pretty handy with a wrench so I would love to try and fix it myself.

That would involve pulling the tranny and pulling the tranny apart.......you could swap any tranny you wanted into it...whether it be a t-18 t-19 np 435 an mp or a zf...you just gotta have the right linkage and make sure it's basically the same clutch setup (IE hydraulic VS mechanical) word to the wise...get a good doner truck with parts...you can never have too many parts no matter what your wife/girlfriend/significant other says........and he's right...if it's grinding it probly is the syncs......

Thank you verm much for the input. I will start looking for a replacement tranny. Would like to find a ZF. It is the more heavy duty tranny i believe. If I can find one that fits a 5.0 and yrs 91-94 I should be alright? right? I would assume that the tranny could be a direct swap, they are both hydrolic and was an option in those yrs. My buddys 92 with 5.0 had the ZF. I have found some reman ZF's for around $1200 dollars. Would this be a good buy? The only thing that really concerns me is the length of both trannys. would they be close to the same or would i need a new drive shaft. The B/W TC should bolt to both of them I hope as well.
