Shift kit question
Shift kit question
Anyone have opinions on whether a shift kit would be a good investment vs. a waste of money? My C6 auto 3 speed is a little rough shifting on my 89F150, 351w. B&M makes one called a shift improver kit for around $35.
Thanks.
Thanks.
From what I know about the kit it's a basic kit with a plate, gaskets and a couple of check ***** and a spring or two. I assume you'll want the tow version versus the race version? It will firm up your shift points which is what you want versus the "drag" between shifts. Good luck!!
i dont know what rans you have but i believe there is a decoder on this site the decodes the numbers on the inside of the driver door. It should tell you what trans you have. I have heard good things about shift kits and i would do it but all my trucks are stick.
I helped a buddy install a B&M shift improver in his 84 Chevy Scottsdale, 350 th350. It was very straight forward, dropped the tranny pan and then the valve body. Installation was a snap. I cant imagine it being much worse on a Ford.
The truck shifts a lot better now, no delay between gears it just bangs into the next one. The shifts will snap your head forward when the truck is floored, it'll spin the tires going into second when floored.
It was worth it. If you haven't replaced your u-joints in a while I'd recommend replacing them when you put the shift kit in. The snappy shifts are better for the transmission, wont let it slip, but they take their toll on u-joints.

Get the more expensive kit from B&M. I have the kit in my E4OD, that trans is a pain to do the kit in, alot of ck ***** to keep track of. If you have a trans prob this wont make it better, if its just the common slow ford shift then yes it will cure that.
