What can be done to help the preformance of a 351M that is going to be rebuilt in the way of Balanceing and porting. Can any of this be done in my home garage/shop. Are there any plans available for building balancing equipment. We use to take our engines to a professional racing engine builder to have this done. Now on a budget...so we want to try to build/or do it on our own. Engine will be used in a 1986 F250 Flatbed/Dump, (good ole work wagon). 4 speed,
Engine came out of 1980 F150. (good ole P-U)
Any suggetions for a cam that will give good power thru the 5500 rpm range and still get descent fuel milage?
Thanks again, Rand
You could do the head porting at home with a die grinder but without a flow bench you would have a tough time getting all the chambers even - and even know what your doing for that matter.
Don't even mess with the idea of balancing at home. For a one time project it would not be worth your investment in time and equipment. If you screwed it up you could ruin your engine.
As for cam, I would suggest something in the way of 212 to 218* duration at .050" and .480 to .500 lift. Dual pattern cam work well with Fords since the exhaust side of things doesn't flow real well.
you can do some little jobs to balance you engine. Yes, mshumack is right, for a one time project it would not be worth your investment in time and equipment but all depands of: How exatcly can you work?
Do you have the possibility to work on a lathe you can bring for example all piston to the same weight, or you can weight out all connecting Rods but the crankshaft....there is no possiblity to do it by yourself.
Try some books which should be available at on of your stores in your local area.
"Engine Blueprinting" or "Performance with economy", published by S.A Design. There you will find many tips about that theme.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Nov-02 AT 07:53 PM (EST)]You can do gasket port matching and casting flash removal on your heads and not have to worry about messing up the flow. In fact you would end up improving it a little. Try www.sa-motorsports.com they have a really good article on porting your heads not to mention blue pinting your block crank and rods.
