Just wondering how universal the bolt pattern on my 78 F250 is. I'm going to the junkyard this weekend for a few things and I might take a look for some rims/tires that look better than mine (wouldn't be hard). I can't expect to see many older trucks there but how long did Ford go before they changed the bolt pattern?
Ford didn't change the 8-lug pattern until 1999 with the newer body style Super duty so anything before that should work. Also be careful with any wheels on a Cheby, the bolt pattern is the same but Cheby used little hubs so the wheels may fit the bowtie and not a REAL truck.
Dodge rims should fit just fine however. They have the same bolt pattern AND a large enough centre hole. GM rims don't fit over our rear axles.
I thought it was in 1996 that Ford changed the bolt pattern to metric. Hmm, I guess Iv'e never checked anything newer.
Easiest thing to do is to lay your existing rim on a peice of cardboard and park the location of the holes and the size of the centre hole. Then there is no guesswork.
Just an FYI - the heavy duty F-250/350 wheels indeed did not change until the '99 model, however, be aware of the light duty F-250 from '97-on that were also 8-lug wheels (you know, the trucks that looked like '97 F-150's). They were already metric on those - seen people get burned from ebay & craigslist on 'em!
The E-250 & 350 vans still have the 61/2" bolt pattern. I took a wheel off my 04 E-350 and put it on my 79 w/D60 front and bolted up and spun fine.Didnt drive on it tho.
