I own a 2006 XLT and it currently now has 40k on the clock. I planning on changing the trans fluid real soon. I just ordered the pan gasket and filter from directfordparts.com, now the only problem I have is I'm not sure what kind of trans fluid to use and how many quarts is it going to take. Also any good DIY links on this forum on servicing the auto trans? Sorry I'm a noob here...

i drained my torque converter and pan and simply kept track of how much came out (plus an estimate for the spillage) in order to figure out how much to put in. i've heard it's pretty important not to overfill.
Well to answer some of the items in the thread. The pan gasket is resuseable and there is no filter its just a screen that is a lifetime part. But it won't hurt a thing to replace them. The transmission takes Mercon V , there is also no torque converter drain plug on the expeditions since 03. Royal Purple does not make a transmission fluid that is Mercon V spec so it can't be used.
So you mean when Royal Purple say's "recommended for all automatic transmissions requiring Ford Mercon®" http://www.synerlec.com/prodsa/matfa.html that it excludes Mercon V for some reason? If that is true then R/P needs to change there advertising would you agree.
it says it is for "Ford Mercon® or GM Dexron® III transmission fluids" That fluid is known as MD-3 by Ford and is fine for use in the older 4R100 or 4EOD. Their fluid is fine for all that require mercon or dexron III fluid. But it is not for use in mercon V applications.
On further investigation I found where the R/P website say's " Ford MERCON® V no RP equivalent". Good info to know. You would still want to check your owners manual for specific trans fluid specs. My O/M say's just plain old MERCON®, not MERCON® V so I will still be using the R/P product.
I don't mean to be running off the thread subject ford390gashog, but I was wondering if you know why do some of the other exp. & navi's use the 4R70W trans? What is the practical difference between the two besides the fluid type?
The 4R70w replaced the 4R100 in the expedition for the increased towing ability in 2003. The navigator used the 4R100 up until 2005 at which time they made the 3v 5.4 the standard engine and did away with the DOHC 5.4. Now the expedition and navigator have the same engine and transmission.
