So I'm on the phone with the Ford service manager. I thought I'd be happy because I was getting it back. See, they have had my truck for 2 weeks for new head gaskets. I wasn't complaining as they used (my supplied) ARP studs and Hypermax gaskets. Well he tells me that as a courtesy he had his tech looked at the front end since I had complained about front end popping. He told me that they found almost a 1 inch play in my lower ball joints. To say I was un-happy was putting it mild. They were going to charge me almost $600 bucks to R&R. However my extended warranty from when I bought the truck covered it. Whew. Man I can't catch a break. I hope this has something to do with the wandering and popping. It better fix the problem.
I just thought I would share. If you have the popping thing, have already checked your hubs then jack up the front end and grabs those wheels. If there is some play, I think there may a good chance at a ball joint problem. I really didn't expect one since me truck has only 40k miles on it. Obviously it can happen though.
those loose ball joints would cause a popping sound and a loose feel in the steering wheel. before they get loose the usally squel bad like the p/s pump. make sure they put in greasable ball joints instead of sealed ones. they last longer.
