C-6 questions.

I have a Ford c6 (4x4) with a shift kit, behind a built 390...When I first bought the truck I noticed weird sounds from the tranny area, mostly when in 2nd gear +. The noise went away, so I didnt think anything else of it, untill the other day when I heard the noise again... Only alot worse. 1st gear sounds OK, but when I hit 2nd and on up it sounds like hell. It vibrates, grinds, sounds like its not fully engaging or somthing... The tranny shifts strong, doesnt slip at all, no oil leaks, plenty of oil.

I should just pull it and inspect it, but money is tight and tools are limited. Im not driving it untill this problem is fixed, but I'd really like to ditch the 4banger Heep for my Ford SOON!


Any ideas of what might be wrong?
How much would it run (Roughly) to have a shop do the work?

You think $$ is tight now, wait till that puppy blows. You are likely ruining some expensive parts that are not normally replaced during a rebuild. Sorry for the bad news, the good news is, there are some very knowlegable guys here that know a lot more than me, hopefully they will be along to help. It might be an easy (cheap) fix

I agree, if you blow it you maybe looking at not only hard parts but a case. ARE YOU SURE IT IS THE TRANSMISSION? Could it be the transfer case? I tend to think it may not be the trans but the transfer case. Like a bearing, or chain. There isn't much in trans that would make noise then not then again, Planetary Gears, or sprag?

Im hoping someone has had a similar problem and diagnosed it as an easy fix, but if not then I will probably take it to Chancler's Transmissions, as he's the one that built it. I like to learn how to rebuild and fix things on my own, but im not a very strong person and the thought of having to lower and lift a tranny isnt too appealing.

Im not sure its the trans, I have been having problems with the T-case (203). However, I only notice the noise in 2nd on up, and when im going a decent speed and I brake for a stop sign,etc. the noise is really bad, the gas peddle vibrates, and it sounds like grinding.


Hmmmm.

Hmm, well, I think I found the culprit...


I pulled the rear housing of the T-case and here is what I found:


That is supposed to be 1 gear, isnt it?

Nope its just the one and only 4 speed 203

Sweet! So its rare then? Anyone want it? $1,000???


So heres what is puzzling me... The gear that broke is the one that sits on the side of the other 2, I dont know how to explain it.. But its the only one that sits on the side, and engages the inner and outer- gear. If it was broken, wouldnt it no longer give power to the rear end? I definately had power in the rear, but it was alot more sluggish then normal...

Oh, and anyone know what that specific part is called by any chance? And where I can order one?

It appears to be part number 41 in mine and somehow the gallery got misnamed

Ok, so I think the gear that blew is the spider gear for the 203 differential, does that sound right?


I have a few questions regarding that.

1. How do the gears sit in the diff housing?
2. Are they welded, or do they spin?
3. ... are they round, our just half and welded?

Im sorry for the stupid questions, I just have no idea what I am doing,haha. When I pulled the cover the gear parts fell out, so I do not know where they went, or how many there was,etc.

I only found 4 broken pieces, which is confusing me.. In the diagrams I have seen, it looks as if there are 4 seprate, round gears in the diff. I only found 4 broken parts... Where are the other pieces?

And finally, where should I look to for replacing these gears?
