The factory calls for gear lube, but the felt seals must be in good shape or they will leak. I have heard of people pumping them full of grease?. I personaly run gear lube. I replaced my felt seals 8 months ago, no leaks to date.

Make sure the ***** are not pitted. If they are pitted they will not hold the oil. Rocks tend to get in there over the years, and cause all kinds of troubles. They can be cleaned up, just make sure there are not to many rough spots.
Guys that run grease, only run grease because the things leak so much. Grease unfortunately runs the risk of spinning away from the surfaces that require lubrication. If the joint cavitates, and is free of lubrication, it will fail. That is why gear oil should be used, and that is another reason open knuckles are desireable.
