turning off back up lights

One night about a week ago, I was trying to back up my camper in the dark. Needless to say, as soon as the back up lights on my truck came on, I couldn't see spit because of the glare. I'm sure I'm not the only one that's experienced this problem. Anyone have any suggestions on the best way to splice in a switch so I could temporarily shut them off? Is this even legal (Mass.)? Or is there a better solution?

There should be a wire under the dash that you can cut into to cut them out. If you can get a hold of a wiring diagram, that would help. What year truck? I might have one. I had a car that I added a switch to years ago to turn them on. I re-wired the lights with brighter halogen bulbs (55W) so I could see backing down my girlfriend's driveway at night. The switch came in handy when someone was riding my tail with the high beams on. I doubt Johnny Law would have been impressed with that one. I don't think disabling them would be illegal as long as you enabled them normally. Maybe use a double throw switch so a red light comes on when the reverse lights are off. Just a thought.

I guess I should have looked at that first, huh.... I don't have anything quite that new. If you don't find it, I'm sure someone here has the factory shop manual. Maybe post a message in the forum for that era truck. Good luck.

You can definitely run a switch to it - but you'll need to run wire and mount a switch.

My suggest on the switch is a "MOMENTARY OFF" switch, so that you can't forget that it is in the off position. You hold it while you are backing, and let it go when you are done.

This is safest, so you don't leave the lights turned off when you need them.

I've been thinking about the "momentary off" switch.

I can back a trailer, straight back (work, boat and 5th wheel) with 1 hand, well maybe not the 5th.

But there is no way I could PUT either one of them OVER THERE with 1 hand.

I'm pretty sure I could back anything up and put it most anywhere I wanted it to go with one hand, but not at night and definitely not while leaning forward trying to keep a momentary swith in the off position. I think I'l end up going to an on/off swtich and splicing it into the wiring near the tranny. Thanks for all your coments.
