air pockets?

Hey Ford People:

I just finished putting an Edelbrock carb, intake and cam in my 81'
F-150 4x4 302. After it starts and warms up, both upper and lower radiator hoses have a lot of pressure on them. After it cools down the hoses are soft again. The hoses, thermostat, water pump, radiator and cap is new. I checked the thermostat to make sure I installed it in the correct direction and it did open up and let water out of the motor. I have heard that you can get air pockets in the motor. Does anybody have any ideas or know how to release the air if its there.

Thanks,
keith

air pockets?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Jan-03 AT 10:16 AM (EST)]Do you have a vacum operated shut off on the heater core hoses? Try turning on the heater for a bit to allow the air trapped in it to escape. Also did you flush your radiator? Depending on the amount of scale inside it, it'll cause a high pressure situation. Just a thought. Also did you drill a 1/8 hole in the thermostat? This helps to burp the engine of air pockets. Just make sure you have the hole at the top.

Hello Mark:

Thanks for the reply. I'll try turning on the heater. The radiator is new. No, I didn't drill a hole in the thermostat. I'll try that next if I have to.

Thanks,
Keith

Run the engine with the cap off for a while to get rid of the air pockets. Be careful as your temp guage won't read the temp right if there isn't water on the sensor. You can overheat with the guage reading cold. Squeeze the top hose over and over to help remove the air. My truck is bad about air pockets.
