I am building a 53 f100 and bought a used 302 engine and need info about this engine. The cast #s above the starter are E68E S B 5L18 and on the heads is 3L21 on left and 3K19 on right head stamped on side of heads is 3000. Any help about the date would be greatly appreciated. It's tough at the auto parts store to get parts with no info. Thanks Jim
The casting number on the heads is on the head gasket side near one of the intake ports, if they are still bolted to the block you'll need a mirror to see the number after the intake is removed.
The heads were cast in or 1973 or 1983 or 1993 (not 1963 since the early heads had casting numbers visible from the top(!)), once you find the casting number you'll be able to deduce which decade. K19 means October 19th, L21 means November 21st.
I'll guess that the engine is actually E6SE, meaning 1986 Tbird original application.
Conanski's tip about using a mirror to see the casting number is a good one, I thought the head had to come right off to view the casting number. Ford was a little dumb in putting the numbers in such inaccessible places.
