My dad currently owns an 06 GMC 1500 crew cab 4x4 that is bone stock. His friend is willing to trade him an 03 or 04 F350 lariat 4x4 with just at 50000 miles on it as an even deal. This is because his friends dad likes the 06 body style versus the new 07 on the GM trucks and he would be selling it to him. My only question is would it be worth it for the 6.0 because all it seems you hear is trouble. I have one friend whose 6.0 was in the shop all the time and I have another friend that has ragged the heck out of it and its still fine. I have heard that you either get a good one or a bad one. This one has been taken care of since my dads friend got it. It does have a chip on it and it still has been ok. Have problems not shown up because of the relatively low miles or do you think it would be a safe bet. Thanks
I certainly would not go for that deal. I don't know how the values compare, but in general, don't buy or trade vehicles with friends/relatives. It has little up side and lot's of downside potential.
So, does pop need to tow or haul more than his 1/2 ton can handle?
Run the values of both trucks thru something like kbb.com and see where you stand. Get the vin and run Oasis and Carfax reports. I know his friend has told him everything, but still...
I know how sketch it sounds but its not. His friend is someone he works with and sees very often as do I now that I work at the same place. The dad knows my moms family from way back too so I know its def not a shady thing. As for the towing he is unhappy with the lack of power in his truck. (we work for a tractor trailer company) Also for hauling a car trailer its kind of weak. My main wonder is about the engine. Say it was maintained well. As for the values they are right at the same of what my dad was going to sell his truck for and what the guy was going to sell his for.
well if he isnt complaing about the problems it is having with 50k on it then it much be good...at the very least you could get the vin of the truck and post it up and we could see what it has done to it. plus it still should have the 5/100k on it.
P.S everyone know a ford tows better than a chevy.........
I don't see the friend deal as a problem, but I gues it depends on the two people. I assume your Dad would know if his friend had been having lots of problems with the Ford. He could do an Oasis report, but I'd expect my friend to give me the problems straight. If it is an acquaintance at my place of work, I probably wouldn't do the deal.
As far as the trucks are concerned, if the values are the same, I don't see a problem. I believe your Dad will come out better because the depreciation of the Ford should be less per year at this point. On the other hand, your Dad's friend will lose more if he trades the Ford on a new vehicle.
