Cam Sensor question

In my personal truck i changed my CPS at 55K miles

Other trucks in fleet at work had them go bad so i was proactive and got it changed before a tow bill

Will i have to change it again??

Or is it the factory one that only goes out???

Another way of phrasing it....is this a every so many miles part i need to pay attention to???

thanks

Here is what I can tell you... 750,000 miles on 4 differant PSD's and I have never changed a CPS out... There are thousands of trucks out there that will NEVER have a CPS go out... If its not broken dont fix it, there is no way to tell if a CPS will last or not...

Seems almost random. They all eventually go out, though. Buy a new $25 unit from dfuser and put it in the glove box for your spare... then you can just run it until it dies.

My '99 had 116,000 on it when I sold it and it never had one go out. My dad was the original owner so I knew it's history.

My '02 had one go out at 61,000 miles. I replaced it with a blue and drove that one until I had the truck chipped and then I switched back to black due to timing issues. Am now at 70,000 and no problems but I do carry a spare.

My neighbor's '02 just had one go out about three months ago. He was at the 160,000 mark. I changed his out for him (Ford wanted almost 300 bucks for the swap) with a black and he is good to go.

I agree with what Pete said. It's random I think. Some owners have told me they have never changed one but others have changed several.

I would carry a spare but if the one you are running is working then I wouldn't mess with it.

Mine went out @ 54000 miles, the week before the price dropped. However, truck was still in warranty (until Sept 07), so it cost me $100.00 for deductable but this also included tow to the dealership. Mine went out very quickly, gave me one start and about 50 ft. and it was all over for that CPS.

No......one is made by Ford (black one) and the blue one is made by International Harvester, I think. They both do the same thing. Blue one is usually a few dollars more.

black is the old ford sensor for $180..then ford released a new and improved gray one for lees the cost $25..the blue is for an International V 6 that happens to work in our power stokes..it does advance the timing just a little..so it is not good to use with a chip or tuner..
