A few months ago I put in new clutch packs in my 9inch. Worked like a dream. I didn't add any friction modifier either. Last week I replaced the pinion housing due too bad corrosion and a leaking seal. After around 20 miles of driving, I stopped and noticed the carrier was very warm to the touch. I figured the bearing was too tight, so I loosened it up, but now I have no limited slip at all. Would that little bit of heat be enough to maybe warp the springs that hold the clutch plates tight? Or should I try using a better brand name gear lube? Thanks for any ideas.
its like this, just about anything will work once in the wrong oil.
at least once.
try putting the right oil in. with the modifier. its not a gimmic, you need it. after you set the rear diff up properly. measure the rolling drag and the back lash. hopefully you havent destroyed the disc's. as for the lube any proper weight will work for 20 miles. what rear end is it? is it a third member 9".?
good luck.
I've put friction modifier in my Mustang and the limited slip never worked since. A buddy of mine has a 9inch that he never put FM in and its still working after 3 years. I don't know.... I've only tried brake torques on gravel when checking if it worked, maybe one brake is holding way more than the other, causing it to slip.
